ABOUT PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project

  • “Project is human activity for achieving goals in given time period”
  • “Unique process comprised of set of coordinated and controlled activities that have their commencing and terminal date and is carried out in a way that the goal responding to specific requirements including limited costs, time and sources is achieved.”

Project has many definitions, most of them agree on several basic characteristics:

  • Clear objective
  • Given time period and costs
  • Team of people working on project
  • Neither practice nor repeating (no serial production)
  • Change

Projects are realized by most of organizations private or public, profit or non-profit. Almost every organization from time to time needs to introduce certain change (project) and some organizations based their growth only on projects. As well as other organizational processes it is useful to know how to plan, administer and monitor projects.

Project Management

Putting it simple Project Management is the management of changes. It is the set of manager skills, tools and techniques that lead (if used properly) towards successful project realization. The aim of project management is to make right steps in right time so that the objective is reached. The emphasis is on planning and this is also the main feature distinguishing the project management from other traditional manager disciplines. Planning is the driving force of the project management and no project can be successful without good planning.

As well as the accountant profession became independent on the field that the organization is dealing with, the project management is becoming independent field.

Main Advantages of the Standardized Project Management

  • Less risky projects and more successful projects
  • More effective managing of projects planning and realization – monitoring of costs, schedule, quality and scope
  • Effective managing of resources
  • Projects can be merged into programmes so that projects complement or share resources
  • Standardization brings lower costs on project managers training and new project managers are able to start working in project team earlier
  • Effectiveness and projects progress can be measured and compared
  • Projects are repeatable – for these type of projects templates can be used for saving the time and costs
  • Project managers, sponsors and stakeholders can cooperate more effectively when using the same methodology

Project Management Standards & Methods

Present trend in project management is fast consolidation of several global standards and strengthening professionalization in project management.

PMI (www.pmi.org) has its origins in the USA and is the world’s leading not-for-profit membership association for the project management profession, with more than half a million members and credential holders in 185 countries. PMI developed and still optimizes global standard for project management PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) existing already in fourth edition. 20|20 Progrant offers courses preparing for certification according to this standard up to PMP (Project Management Professional).
PRINCE (http://www.apmg-international.com) is the acronym and stands for Projects in Controlled Environment. This standard was originally developed for British government IT projects but soon started to be used also in other types of projects. Second version – PRINCE2 – was launched in 1996. 20|20 Progrant is accredited for providing training in this standard and offers courses for certifications PRINCE2 Foundation and PRINCE2 Practitioner.

IPMA (www.ipma.ch and www.ipma.cz) is the most important European non-governmental organization for project management and is spreading all over the world (nowadays representing more than 50 project management associations). In 4-steps certification system fundamental is the IPMA Competence Baseline (ICB). Our courses according to this standard can be found here.
